Equal Opportunity Policy

What is Equality Act?

The UK government has a set of regulations and guidelines in place to promote equal opportunities in the workplace. These are primarily set out in the Equality Act 2010, which is the primary legislation governing equal opportunities in the UK. The act prohibits discrimination on the grounds of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, and sexual orientation.

The act also sets out a number of specific duties for employers, including the need to:

  • Ensure that job advertisements do not contain discriminatory language or criteria.
  • Ensure that recruitment processes are fair and non-discriminatory.
  • Make reasonable adjustments to enable disabled employees to perform their jobs.
  • Provide equal pay and conditions for employees doing equal work.
  • Ensure that employees are not subjected to harassment or victimisation.
  • Monitor and report on diversity and equal opportunities in the workplace.

The UK government also provides guidance on equal opportunities for employers through its ACAS (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) website. This guidance covers topics such as preventing discrimination, promoting diversity and inclusion, and handling complaints of discrimination or harassment.
