Climate Change Policy

What is Climate Change Act?

Climate Change Act 2008: This act established a legally binding target to reduce the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 100% (compared to 1990 levels) by 2050. It also created the Committee on Climate Change, an independent body responsible for advising the government on emissions reduction targets and progress.

Net Zero by 2050: In June 2019, the UK became the first major economy in the world to pass a law requiring it to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This means that any emissions produced by the UK must be offset by equivalent removals from the atmosphere, such as by planting trees or using carbon capture and storage technology.

Clean Growth Strategy: This policy document sets out the UK government’s plan for meeting its emissions reduction targets, with a focus on low-carbon technologies and innovation. It includes measures such as investing in renewable energy, improving energy efficiency in homes and businesses, and supporting electric vehicles.

Carbon Pricing: The UK has a carbon pricing system, called the Carbon Price Support, which places a tax on the carbon content of fossil fuels used in power generation. This encourages the shift towards cleaner, low-carbon sources of energy.

Renewable Energy Targets: The UK has set a target to generate 40% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. It has also committed to phasing out coal power plants by 2024 and ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030.

These policies and regulations are just a few examples of the measures the UK government has put in place to fight climate change. By setting ambitious targets, investing in low-carbon technologies and promoting sustainable practices, the UK is taking action to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and help combat global warming.
