IT Support Engineer

£33,000–£36,000 depending on experience
Full-time | Monday to Friday, 9am–5pm
Dunfermline | Flexible home working available

Join a small team where you can learn, contribute and grow

Forth Tech is looking for an experienced IT Support Engineer to join our team in Dunfermline.

This is a hands-on role for someone who enjoys solving problems, working with clients and learning new technology.

You’ll be part of a small support team that works closely together and supports clients across a wide range of industries, including legal, construction, charity, sport and healthcare.

The work is varied. One day you could be helping a client with Microsoft 365 or a network issue, and the next you could be working with Intune, servers, managed cybersecurity services, broadband, VoIP or AI tools.

You’ll also have opportunities to work alongside our Professional Services team on projects as your experience grows.

We don’t expect you to know every system we use from day one. Training will be provided, and we’ll help you build your knowledge over time.

What it’s like working at Forth Tech

We’re a small team, and that means people know each other, help each other and get involved.

Our support team currently consists of three people and works closely with Professional Services, Central Services and a dedicated manager.

We work hard, but we also want Forth Tech to be somewhere people enjoy working.

We value people who are calm, reliable, easy to work with and willing to take responsibility. We also want people who are curious and genuinely interested in IT.

Our core values are:

  • Client First
We understand our clients, stay connected to their business and proactively help them achieve their goals.
  • Own the Outcome
We take responsibility and deliver on our commitments.
  • Keep It Clear
We communicate simply, honestly and transparently.
  • Act with Integrity
We do the right thing — always.
  • Improve Continuously
We learn, adapt and get better every day.
  • Stronger Together
We respect, support and succeed as one team.

Our core focus is purposeful performance — delivering reliable, secure IT that drives measurable business growth.

What you’ll be doing

Your role will involve supporting whatever comes into the Service Desk and taking ownership of issues through to resolution.

Typical work includes:

  • Supporting Microsoft 365, desktops, laptops, servers and networks
  • Troubleshooting broadband, connectivity, VoIP and general IT issues
  • Supporting Microsoft Intune and other cloud platforms
  • Managing users, permissions, passwords and devices
  • Resolving tickets from start to finish
  • Speaking directly with clients to understand issues and keep them informed
  • Working with third-party suppliers and vendors where needed
  • Keeping tickets and technical documentation accurate and up to date
  • Identifying opportunities to improve client systems
  • Working with colleagues on more complex technical issues
  • Getting involved in Professional Services projects as your experience develops

We want our engineers to get to know our clients properly.

Where possible, we’d rather someone pick up the phone and have a conversation than rely on email if talking directly will get to the answer faster.

Technology you’ll work with

You’ll be exposed to a broad range of systems and technologies, including:

  • Microsoft 365
  • Microsoft Intune
  • Windows desktops and servers
  • Networking
  • Managed SOC and cybersecurity services
  • Broadband and leased lines
  • DNS and domain management
  • VoIP
  • Ubiquiti UniFi and Zyxel
  • Datto RMM, Autotask, IT Glue and other Kaseya tools
  • AI and emerging technologies

Experience with everything above isn’t required.

What matters is having a good technical foundation, a willingness to learn and the confidence to ask questions when you need help.

Learning and development

We want people to keep improving.

When you join, you’ll be supported through:

  • A buddy system
  • One-to-one training
  • Training videos
  • Vendor-led training sessions
  • Paid study time for exams funded by Forth Tech
  • Day-to-day learning from the wider technical team

As you grow, there may be opportunities to develop into areas such as:

  • Senior Support
  • Professional Services
  • Central Services
  • Customer Success
  • Other technical or client-focused roles as Forth Tech grows

There isn’t one fixed career path. Development will depend on your strengths, interests and the opportunities available within the business.

What we’re looking for

You’ll need:

  • At least 2 years’ experience in a similar IT support role
  • Good Microsoft 365 knowledge
  • A good understanding of networking
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Good communication skills
  • Confidence speaking directly with clients
  • A full driving licence
  • Access to your own car

We’re also looking for someone who:

  • Is reliable and takes ownership
  • Stays calm when dealing with problems
  • Gets on well with different personalities
  • Works well as part of a small team
  • Is comfortable picking up the phone to clients
  • Wants to understand the client’s business, not just close the ticket
  • Works hard without taking themselves too seriously
  • Has a genuine interest in IT and learning

Experience with Datto RMM, Autotask, IT Glue, DNS, broadband, networking equipment or relevant IT qualifications would be useful, but isn’t essential.

Security is part of how we work

Forth Tech is a Cyber Essentials Certification Body.

That means cybersecurity isn’t treated as a separate add-on. It influences how we support, manage and improve our clients’ IT environments.

As part of the role, you’ll gain exposure to security-focused systems, managed SOC services and the standards we use to keep clients secure.

Flexible working

This role is primarily based from our Dunfermline office.

We also recognise that people sometimes need flexibility. Home working can be arranged for things such as appointments or emergencies, and agreed regular home-working days may also be possible depending on the individual and the needs of the business.

Out-of-hours support

There is some out-of-hours support associated with the role.

This includes emergency cover over the Christmas and New Year period on a rota, along with occasional weekend support.

Where applicable, this work is paid in addition to your standard salary.

What you’ll get

Alongside a salary of £33,000–£36,000 depending on experience, benefits include:

  • 24 days’ annual holiday plus agreed public holidays
  • Company pension
  • Income protection
  • Free onsite parking
  • Corporate employee discounts
  • Paid study time for exams funded by Forth Tech
  • Training and development
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • Virtual GP and Advanced Nurse Practitioner access
  • Online physiotherapy
  • Everyday wellbeing support
  • Long-term condition support
  • Second medical opinion service
  • Adult and elder care support
  • Fully funded vocational rehabilitation support
  • Flexible home working arrangements where appropriate
